U can but no use!!

If any disaster comes, both your database and standby will crash .. very difficult to recover..

No use? Yes, there are many usages.
* High availability from a drop file
* Recover a block corruption
* Use lag to recover from logical mistake or corruption
...

Michel

Thank u, but this can be done when the database is in remote server also. keeping one standby database in remote server is most recommended. we can have standby in the same server if we want to have more then one standby database.

This depends on your purpose.
You cannot say that 1 standby database on the same server is useless and not recommended, this is wrong.

Michel

Once again this is wrong.
Why is this of no use?

This depends on your purpose.

The primary purpose of datagaurd is to provide high availability, data protection, and disaster recovery.

This also applies with standby databases on the same machine.
If a primary database files gets corrupt we can take backup from standby and recover it.
But all these purpose fails if the entire system crashes.

The fact that an architecture fails because it is intended to support a specific failure and does not support others does not prove it is useless.
Otherwise you can say that any data guard is useless, RAC is useless, and so on as they do not cover ALL the failures.

A standby database in the same server as the primary one is useful for some things and does not cover other things, this does NOT mean it is useless.
It covers hardware io errors, it covers application errors (if you configure a time lag), it covers some dba or sysadmin errors, and so on.

Regards
Michel
